Surrounded by diverse terrains, marathons in New Mexico can be tough, enlightening, and elevating. Read on to find out what marathons have the highest peaks and made the cut in the “Land of Enchantment”.
Bataan Memorial Death March- White Sands
This marathon honors the soldiers who were taken prisoner in Bataan and can really test a runners will. One of the unique features to this marathon includes the “heavy” challenge, where runners will need to carry a 35lb bag throughout the race. Due to the courses rugged style, friends and family will only be allowed to cheer from the start and finish lines. If you register as a military participant you will be required to run in uniform. The Course
The course runs counter clockwise through loose sand and hills. The elevation climbs as high as 1650 ft. Considering the cutoff time for runners is 8 pm, this race is not meant for PR times. When you cross the finish line be sure to shake hands with some Bataan survivors.

Duke City Marathon- Alburquerque
As one of New Mexico’s premier events, you can expect thousands of marathoners to be in attendance. Runners looking to set PR’s can do it on this beginner friendly course. There will be no race day pick up, however, runners will have the option to get shirts, bibs, chips early at the health expo or by mail for an extra charge. The Course
No strollers are allowed on this out and back trail, however, it is open to the public- watch out for cyclists. According to the marathon’s website, “Elevation at the Start/Finish is 5018 feet. Elevation at the turn around point (13.1 miles) is 5141 feet, a difference of +123 feet.” Which makes for a nice downhill you can let loose on. Check out the chart below:

Dust Bowl Marathon Series Day 5- Clayton
This New Mexico marathon is probably the toughest course in the Dust Bowl Series, which holds 5 events. What runners found awesome about this race is the food, swag, and dinosaur tracks. You won’t be allowed to start early, however, the “no runner left behind policy” is comforting to beginners. The cost for this race starts at $95. The Course
This out and back course in Clayton State Park loops like a figure eight . The hills make it challenging but also fun when your downhill running. Food and water will be provided at the aid stations, as well as, showers located at the finish.

Shiprock Marathon- Shiprock
Marathons with mountains are not uncommon and usually come with some sort of elevation, except this race where no climbing is allowed! Shiprock- “rock with wings”- is part of an extinct volcano and is considered sacred ground. Considered one of the best spring marathons by dailyburn.com, this race allows up to 1500 entries for the event. Registration for this Boston qualifier starts at $65 for early birds. The Course
The incline at Red Rock Highway is just the first of many- this one being the shortest. The altitudes, which start at 6000 ft, may be tough if you are normally a flatland runners. The rock formations you see along the route will be tempting to climb. Just remember, climbing Shiprock is forbidden! The final 6 miles are a decline to the finish line.

Angel Fire Adventure Race- Angel Fire
This New Mexico marathon has the ability to take anyone’s breath away- figuratively and literally. The race’s location has an elevation of 8,300 ft, where great views of the mountains turn into gorgeous photos for your marathon album. The Course
With rolling hills, the course is a loop of single track trails. Aid stations will be located every two miles supplied with water and gel packets. The marathon’s website is proud to say “It’s the perfect summer race-cation destination for the entire family!”
